How to choose a decorating style for your home
The quickest way to find your decorating style is to look at what you already save. The rooms you keep coming back to usually share a few things: a palette, a material, a mood. Name those, test them on one room with the furniture you already have, and you'll know whether the style fits your life before you spend much.
Look at what you already save
Your saved photos and pins usually repeat the same few colors, materials and shapes.
How to do it: Pick your 20 favorites and write down what they have in common.
Name the style
Common styles include Japandi, Scandinavian, Mid-century, Minimalist, Boho, Coastal, Modern and Industrial. Many homes mix two.
How to do it: Find the one or two names that match most of your favorites.
Start from what you're keeping
Your sofa, bed or table is staying, so the style has to work with it.
How to do it: Note the color and wood tone of your biggest pieces, and favor styles that suit them.
Pick a palette, not just a color
A style is easier to follow as three or four colors: a light base, a wood or neutral, and one or two accents.
How to do it: Write your palette down and take it with you when you shop.
Think about how you live
Kids, pets, a small space or little natural light all change what will work.
How to do it: Choose materials that cope with your daily life, like washable covers or a rug that hides wear.

Test it small
Cushions, a throw, a lamp or a plant let you try a style without a big spend.
How to do it: Change one small thing, live with it for a week, then decide on the next.
Keep a few things that are just you
A room that follows a style too closely can feel like a showroom.
How to do it: Keep the pieces you love, even if they don't match the style.
